Wolf Killed calf on neighbor's farm in 2003
What a year! It seemed like it just went too fast.
In the beginning we had a few new Predator hunt's and the old faithful of them all, the U.P. Predator Challenge had a great turn out. Be sure to check out the Varmint/Predator hunting section of the forum to view the past, and present upcoming hunts! Hope to see you there. If your Hunt club is scheduling one please by all means let us know and we will get it posted as soon as possible.
The fishing has been great. I personaly didn't have much time to fish but our other members caught many fish and beautiful pictures to boot!
Small game season was a good one, and a few critter's were taken.
Trapping season on the other hand was GREAT! I had been setting my leg holds at a farm that was getting a lot of calf and even bigger cow kills. After 2-3 years of seeminly wiping out the varmints they came back with a vengence. I organized a few hunts with members from the forum and we kept the population down, but then the bigger dog's showed up! You know what I mean...Them big, bad wolfies!
Of course the means to control them had been halted by the courts and the wolf huggers so I took control of the situation and set my traps as I always did for Coyutes when one day I saw movement in a pasture setting. It turned out to be a 90 Lb 3 year old Male. I called my good friend and notified our guys in Green that I got one and my friend from APHIS came out, tranqed and collered it then let it loose...Well, just about that time the farmer came up on his tractor and saw that the wolf was being released. His glare could of drop a hardened criminal to his knees! Ha! We told him that it couldn't be killed, BUT he collered it so when it came back and wreaked havoc it could then be killed legaly...Well, 5 wolves later the problem went away for a little while until a big Black wolf was seen...
Now once again the court's and the hugger's have stopped the culling but it looks like in March they can once again get these damn things back under control. They need to take out about a couple hundred or so to really put the fear back in them but we'll take what we can...
Meanwhile many people are taking matters into their own hands and we are setting up a fund to help them with their court cost's, motel bill, or whatever means necesary to help them. On the other hand the Timber Wolf Alliance from Ashland, Wisconsin is putting up rewards for prosecution of these people just trying to keep their family and livestock, or family pets safe! More to follow on this ugly "Wild Dog" situation!
Our summer varied and some areas of the U.P. were in the drought while others were soaked with constant rain. Many fish were being caught and posted on the site.
Deer season 2006...Oh boy, touchy subject there! I saw plenty of horns, well...Still in velvet during the summer and on top of one of the local Ski resorts where they knew they'd be safe! But as soon as I was in the woods nothing but fawns and does. Most hunters left camp after a few days, and some never bothered to go.
We are going to pick the Biggest Buck from the 2006 season soon, so make sure you check out the entries and pictures in the Yooper Sportsman Big Buck contest section...Last year's winner was a Father and Daughter team. The winners will receive an engraved plaque and maybe one of these years we can give out gift certificates too!?
Winter is here once again, but it's 38* outside right now and its just days after the New year, 2007! Oh well, it'll be here soon enough. Snowshoes are sitting on my front porch during the night so time to get outside in the morning and see if I can't get a few. We were at a deficit for annual snowfall but this last storm over the Christmas holiday has us just about caught up to this time last year which is about 8 or 9 feet.
Once again please check out our forum. Drop in, post a few pictures or tell us how your hunting and fishing has been so far. Most lakes are good enough to ice fish off of but PLEASE be careful. Check and re-check the thickness as you walk out. I belong to the local search and rescue (SAR) team and would rather meet up with you on the ice and not under it!
Everyone be safe outdoor's, enjoy what time you have with friends and family and most of all get out when you can!
